Gum grafting in Angus, Montréal: Protect and strengthen your smile

Gums play an essential role in oral health. When they recede, they can expose the roots of the teeth, leading to hypersensitivity, weakening of the teeth and, in some cases, an increased risk of cavities and tooth loss.

At Havre Dentaire, we offer two types of gum grafts to strengthen and stabilize gum tissue. This treatment prevents complications while improving the aesthetic appearance of your smile.

Why is a gum graft necessary?

If recession is left untreated, it can worsen over time, exposing more of the roots and increasing the risk of inflammation and discomfort.

Gum recession can be caused by several factors:

  • Brushing too aggressively or using the wrong brushing technique;
  • Gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis);
  • Poorly positioned teeth causing tension on the gums;
  • A genetic predisposition to thinner gums;
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding) which puts excessive pressure on the gums.

What types of gum grafts are available?

Greffe autogène libre

Free autogenous graft

This type of graft involves removing a thin layer of tissue (including the epithelium and connective tissue) directly from the palate and transplanting it to the area where the gum has receded.

Main indications:

  • Increase gum thickness;
  • Partially cover an exposed root;
  • Strengthen the gum in a fragile area.

This graft is often used in cases of thin gums or to prevent recession from progressing.

Connective tissue graft

This type of graft is also taken from the palate, but only the underlying connective tissue is used, without the epithelial layer. The graft is placed under the existing gum, which is repositioned to cover it.

Main indications:

  • Covering an exposed root for aesthetic or functional reasons;
  • Reducing hypersensitivity;
  • Improving the appearance of the gum line.

Connective tissue grafting is often preferred in the aesthetic zone because it allows for better visual integration with the natural gingiva.

Greffe de gencive

How is a gum graft performed?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and involves removing a piece of gingival tissue (usually from the palate) and attaching it to the area where the gum has receded.

The stages of treatment

The dentist examines the gum recession and discusses possible graft options.

  • Local anesthesia is administered to ensure the patient's comfort.
  • The area is cleaned to remove all traces of bacteria.
  • A gum graft is removed and attached to the affected area.
  • Stitches are placed to promote healing.

Follow-up is performed to ensure that the graft is properly integrated and healing is progressing.

Post-operative care and recovery

After the procedure, full recovery usually takes two to three weeks, depending on the type of graft performed. During this period, it is important to follow certain precautions to promote optimal healing:

  • Avoid brushing the treated area during the healing period;
  • Eat soft foods to limit irritation of the gums;
  • Avoid tobacco and alcohol, which interfere with healing;
  • Follow your dentist's recommendations for taking painkillers and using antiseptic mouthwashes.
